Mr Henry Cherries is the trading name of Judare Investments Limited, a family-owned New Zealand company registered in Cromwell, Central Otago on 6 October 1997. We grow cherries on our own trees and sell them direct to New Zealand households.
The paper run that bought an orchard
When Reece was a kid delivering papers around Central Otago, he told the old man, Mr Henry, that they should be growing cherries. Henry knew exactly what was in that bank account. "If you're serious," he said, "give me all your paper run money."
Six years of daily deliveries went into the first trees. That was 1997.
Nearly thirty years on, the same family is still here on the same stretch of Kawarau Gorge Road, still growing cherries on our own trees, and still packing every box ourselves.
How it works
We harvest to order. Nothing sits in storage waiting for someone to buy it. When you pick a delivery window, your cherries are picked and packed for that date and couriered overnight, so what arrives is a day off the tree.
Each window is limited by what is ripe that week, which is why the good dates go early.
People ask us about New Zealand Cherry Corp
It's a separate company. Our family orchard has been going since 1997. New Zealand Cherry Corp is an export business that started in 2005, eight years later.
Both appeared on TVNZ's Country Calendar, in an episode where Reece took viewers behind the scenes of what goes into growing, harvesting, packing and marketing cherries, and everything in between. The programme filmed our family orchard alongside the corporate export blocks, which is probably why the two get mixed up.
